What is PLAR?

PLAR is a process of identifying, assessing and recognizing skills, competencies, knowledge and formal learning to facilitate the transfer of skills and knowledge of individuals into further learning and work.

PLAR enables individuals to complete a portfolio of their entire learning experiences, which may lead them to identifying a career path, identifying courses to enroll in or to receive formal recognized credit at a post-secondary institution for their prior learning. PLAR portfolios can be powerful tools in helping learners identify themselves as learners, recognize their own competencies and are intended to encourage engagement in further learning and work.

PLAR at post-secondary institutions helps learners avoid duplicating learning for which they have already demonstrated competency and can help expedite transitions into formal education.
